Many historical sources show that the tradition of olive oil production in the wider Cartoceto area goes back to the 13th century when the Mezzadria agreement used to oblige olive growers to pay a hundred soldi or give half of their crop to the landowners.
With such a long history, Cartoceto oil is still today produced in the Marche region, within the province of Pesaro-Urbino. This extra virgin olive oil is obtained from the Leccino, Frantoio and Raggiola olive varieties, which must make up at least 70% of the groves, either individually or combined.
