Moretta Fanese | Local Alcoholic Coffee Drink From Fano, Italy | TasteAtlas

Moretta fanese

Moretta fanese is a combination of coffee (usually espresso), lemon zest, and equal parts of brandy, rum, and an anise-flavored liqueur. The drink is made by heating sugar, lemon, and alcohol before adding brewed coffee on top. The coffee needs to be carefully poured so it would not mix with other ingredients.

Moretta is typically served in small glasses, and when served, the layer of liquor, coffee, and foam should be visible. According to a legend, the drink originated among the sailors and fishers who used to drink laced coffee drinks before setting off to sea.

Nowadays, it is mostly enjoyed as a digestif or an afternoon cocktail. It is included on the list of traditional agricultural products (PAT), and it has been listed as an official cocktail by the Italian Barmen Association (AIBES).
