Gin and It

Gin and It is a simple classic that combines gin and sweet vermouth. The name is a shortened version of Gin and Italy—with the latter being a reference to the sweet red (rosso) vermouth that has Italian origin. The drink is mixed with ice, and the combination is then strained into a martini or a coupe glass.

It is garnished with a lemon twist. This cocktail probably originated in the United States, and at some point, it crossed the ocean and became a popular option in Britain during the first half of the 20th century. Because of its age, this classic appears in several variations that often differ in the ratio of ingredients or include additional elements.

Interestingly, the original version of Gin and It was usually not chilled.
