San Francisco Cocktail

San Francisco is a rather obscure vintage cocktail that first appeared in the Café Royal Cocktail Book published in 1937. The drink features equal amounts of sloe gin—a British liqueur made with gin and sloe berries—and dry and sweet vermouth, along with orange and aromatic bitters.

To make the cocktail, the ingredients are added to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. The combination is shaken until chilled, and the mix is then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. San Francisco is typically garnished with a cherry and is best served as a pre or after-dinner drink.

Not much is known about its origin, but San Francisco might have been transported to Britain during Prohibition. There is another cocktail with the same name, but it is based on vodka and banana liqueur.
