Adonis

Adonis is a classic cocktail that combines sherry, vermouth, and orange bitters. It is usually made with fino or manzanilla sherry and sweet vermouth. The amount of sherry and vermouth can vary, but it usually relies on a 2:1 ratio. The cocktail is made by adding all the ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice.

The combination is stirred until chilled and is then strained into a serving glass. This cocktail is traditionally served in a coupe glass and comes garnished with an orange twist. Some versions only squeeze orange zest on top and do not use it as a garnish.

Adonis is one of the classic cocktails that is mainly enjoyed as an aperitif. It was named after the 1884 Broadway musical created by William Gill. It is unknown when the cocktail originated, but the first written reference dates from 1887, and it was most likely created at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
