Diplomat is a low-alcohol cocktail that combines dry and sweet vermouth with maraschino liqueur. The ratio of dry and sweet vermouth is usually adjusted to taste, and most contemporary variations will also include a dash of bitters. The ingredients are usually mixed with ice, and the mix is strained into a coupe or an old-fashioned glass.
Some variations use the shake and strain method. This cocktail can be garnished with a cherry or orange zest. Diplomat is often dubbed as an aperitif cocktail, and it is intended for sipping. The recipe first appeared in Robert Vermeire's Cocktails: How to Mix Them, published in 1922.
