Pêssego da Cova da Beira | Local Peach From Cova da Beira, Portugal | TasteAtlas

Pêssego da Cova da Beira

(Cova da Beira peach)

The different varieties of Cova da Beira peach are produced in the Castelo Branco region, an area characterized by unique climatic conditions in the valley of the river Zêzere. This location keeps the trees well-protected from the strong Atlantic winds in the Beira interior region. There are multiple different varieties of the Cova da Beira peach: Dixired, Red Top, JH Hale, Merril Franciscan, Black, Rubidoux, Carnival, and Halloween.

Each batch of this late-maturing peache possesses different coloration and pigmentation due to its sugar content, which must always be higher than 7%. The peach is particularly fragrant and juicy, and is characterized by yellow flesh and a distinctive flavor.

These peaches are mainly consumed as table fruit, but also serve as an ingredient in cakes and pastries, fruit juices, jams, liqueurs, and fruit yogurt.
