Up to Date is a simple cocktail based on rye whiskey and sherry. It is made with equal amounts of rye (sometimes replaced with bourbon) and amontillado sherry, along with Angostura bitters and orange liqueur. The cocktail is made by adding all the ingredients to a chilled mixing glass filled with ice.
The drink is stirred until chilled and then strained into a chilled glass. This classic was first listed in the popular Recipes for Mixed Drinks, written by Hugo Ensslin and published in 1916. Ensslin was a bartender at the Hotel Wallick, and his book records the pre-Prohibition bartending scene in New York.
