The Austrian scarlet runner bean is grown for the most part around the town of Bad Radkersburg which is settled north of the Mur river in the southeastern part of Styria, where almost 90% of Steirische Käferbohne is produced, but also in the fertile Rába river plains, within the neighboring districts of Weiz and Feldbach.
This particular bean variety found its way from the New World to Austria in the 16th century, and over time evolved to become a distinctive Styrian specialty. The harvest takes place in fall, and to ensure the exceptional quality of these beans, the growers must first carefully hand-pick them, after which they are mechanically separated, dried, and purified.
