Steirischer Kren | Local Condiment From Styria, Austria | TasteAtlas

Steirischer Kren

(Styrian Horseradish)

This horseradish cultivar is traditionally grown in southern Styria, where loamy sand soils and the local microclimate offer excellent growing conditions because of its high humidity and favorable planting season temperatures. Steirischer Kren is characterized by its sharp, piquant flavor, high levels of vitamin C, as well as anti-inflammatory and digestive properties.

It is enjoyed in many different Austrian dishes, salads, or spreads. Freshly grated or puréed, Styrian horseradish is an essential ingredient of Austrian cuisine, found in every traditional Easter and Brettljause cold platter.
