Kecap manis is a traditional condiment that's also sometimes used as a cooking sauce. This type of soy sauce is very aromatic and sweetened with palm sugar. The color is darker than regular soy sauce, the texture is viscous and syrupy, and the sweet flavor has hints of molasses, caramel, and butterscotch.
It's also often enriched with various spices such as cloves, coriander, cinnamon, star anise, and black pepper. In Indonesia, kecap manis is the most popular type of soy sauce. The condiment is often added to dishes such as nasi goreng, ketoprak, ayam kecap, and semur beef stew.
