Antichi pomodori di Napoli

Antichi pomodori di Napoli are traditional tomato varieties from the Campania region, particularly in the provinces of Naples, Avellino, and Salerno. They belong to the San Marzano type and include over 30 ecotypes, distinguished by their thin skin, sweet and aromatic flavor, and fleshy pulp.

These historic varieties were at risk of extinction due to the spread of commercial hybrids, which, while more productive and resistant, lacked the same organoleptic qualities. In the mid-1990s, a recovery project funded by the Campania Region began, leading to the preservation and promotion of these original ecotypes.

Harvested manually from July to September, these tomatoes are carefully selected when fully ripe, often at sunset. They are then washed and preserved naturally without additives, maintaining their authentic flavor for up to a year. Highly valued in Neapolitan cuisine, they are essential for making rich pasta sauces, Neapolitan ragù, and the classic Margherita pizza.
