Pera d'Abruzzo

Pera d'Abruzzo is a traditional Italian tomato variety native to the Abruzzo region in central-eastern Italy. Historically cultivated in both coastal and mountainous areas, this heirloom tomato is known for its distinctive pear shape, deep red color with green shoulders, and ribbed appearance.

Fruits typically weigh between 150 to 250 grams (5.3 - 8.8 oz), with some reaching up to 500 grams (1 lb). The flesh is dense, meaty, and contains minimal seeds, offering a mild, sweet flavor. Rich in natural antioxidants like lycopene and other carotenoids, the pera d'Abruzzo is prized for its health benefits.

Traditionally, it has been a staple in local economies and cuisines, especially valued for making "passata di pomodoro," a homemade tomato purée prepared during family gatherings in August. Despite its excellent organoleptic qualities, cultivation has declined since the 1960s due to its imperfect appearance.

Efforts are ongoing to preserve this variety and its traditional uses.
