Lime Rickey | Local Cocktail From Washington, D.C., United States of America | TasteAtlas

Lime Rickey

Lime Rickey is a refreshing combination of gin, lime juice, soda water, and either fruit syrup or sugar syrup. The first Rickey was made at Shoomaker’s bar in Washington D. C. in the 1880s, when it consisted of rye whiskey, fizzy water, and lemon juice, served on the rocks in a highball glass.

Over time, gin eclipsed whiskey as the standard spirit used in the preparation of this cocktail. Today, some of the variations of Lime Rickey include Sheeney Rickey (without limes), Johnny Rickey (with dark rum), and the famous Mojito.
