Black And Tan | Local Alcoholic Mixed Drink From England, United Kingdom | TasteAtlas

Black and Tan

Black and Tan is a beer cocktail that contains two types of beer: pale and dark. As the name suggests, beer is layered into a pint glass to display a combination of light and dark beer. To prepare it, one should slowly pour stout beer over the back of a bar spoon into a glass that already contains light lager beer.

The British tradition of blending beers has been present since the 17th century, and Black and Tan probably originated in England around 1889 when it was first mentioned in the context of a beverage. However, due to its political connotations, its name is considered disrespectful in Ireland, so it is often referred to as A Half and a Half.
