Marrone Del Mugello | Local Chestnuts From Mugello, Italy | TasteAtlas

Marrone del Mugello

Traditionally grown in the Tuscan province of Florence, Marrone del Mugello is a particularly sweet variety of chestnut characterized by a rich flavor with slight hints of vanilla and an intense aroma reminiscent of hazelnuts and freshly baked bread.

Rich in carbohydrates, especially starch, Mugello chestnuts are quite nourishing and make for a good alternative to most grains. In the past, during periods of famine, they were known as 'poor people's bread'. Today, the sweet chestnuts of Mugello are enjoyed as a delicacy and used in all kinds of recipes, from appetizers and side dishes to desserts.
