Castagna di Vallerano | Local Chestnuts From Vallerano, Italy | TasteAtlas

Castagna di Vallerano

The Vallerano chestnuts are grown in the woods surrounding the volcanic hills of Cimini, located in the province of Viterbo. Since chestnut trees thrive in the well-drained soil rich in minerals and organic matter, the densely forested volcanic area around Lake Vico is particularly suitable for their cultivation, which can be traced back to ancient times. Today, chestnuts orchards planted around Cimini cover over 600 hectares of land, and the chestnuts of Vallerano are widely known and prized for their delicate taste.

They can be enjoyed in various ways: raw, cooked, roasted, glazed, or even dried. Moreover, every year between October and November, people gather for the feast of Castagna di Vallerano, where they can try a number of different desserts and other dishes prepared with these delicious nuts.
