The world’s largest-selling Irish whiskey, Jameson, is made by blending two types of whiskey — best pot still whiskey, made from malted and unmalted barley, and fine grain whiskey. It’s matured for a minimum of 4 years and distilled three times, ensuring optimal smoothness.
The aging is done in casks previously used for aging bourbon and sherry. Interestingly, until 1968 it was sold by the cask, but today, Jameson is sold by the bottle. The original Jameson whiskey is light, floral, and nutty, and because of the casks it was aged in, it also has a toasted wood and sherry flavor.
Besides this basic version, Jameson has other whiskey varieties, such as Jameson Black Barrel and Jameson Blender’s Dog, to name a few. The whisky was created in Dublin by John Jameson, a Scotsman, in 1780 and is now produced by the Irish Distillers subsidiary of Pernod Ricard.
