Vespetrò is a herbal liqueur traditionally associated with Lombardy, specifically the Canzo commune. The liqueur is produced commercially, but it is also commonly prepared as a homemade version with traditional recipes that are passed down to family members.
Vespetrò is made with a secret recipe, and the exact ingredients are not known. It has a distinctive deep yellow color and intense herbal aroma and flavor with hints of citrus and anise. Vespetrò is quite potent, reaching 40% ABV. It is usually enjoyed as a well-chilled digestif or accompaniment with desserts.
Vespetrò has a long tradition in the region. It probably originated sometime in the 18th century as it was already a familiar item throughout the 19th century. Commercial production was started by Scannagatta, a local pharmacist, in the 19th century.
