Petrafennula | Traditional Dessert From Sicily, Italy | TasteAtlas

Petrafennula

Petrafennula is a traditional dessert bar originating from Sicily. This crunchy and sweet bar is usually made with a combination of honey, orange peel, lemon peel, almonds in sugar, and cinnamon. The honey is heated in a pan over low heat and mixed with citrus peels that have been cut into small pieces.

The mixture is cooked while continuously stirring, and once it thickens a bit and becomes slightly hard, it’s removed from the heat. Almonds in sugar and cinnamon are added to the mixture, and it’s then poured into a greased baking tray and flattened.

Once cooled to room temperature, petrafennula is cut into diamonds or rectangular shapes before consumption. During the festive Christmas season, it’s typically enjoyed after a big meal.
