Grimes Golden Apples | Local Apple Variety From Brooke, United States of America | TasteAtlas

Grimes Golden apples

Grimes Golden is an American apple variety hailing from Brooke County, West Virginia, where it was discovered in 1804. The apples have a golden green skin and a noticable perfume. Beneath the skin, the texture of the flesh is slightly softer than that of Golden Delicious and the aroma has a hint of coriander.

The flavors are rich and mildly spicy. Due to high sugar content, Grimes Golden are usually used for brewing hard cider and distilling brandy, but they’re also used in sauces and pies. The apples are harvested from late September and into October.
