Best Murcian Alcoholic Beverage Types
Also known as Cuarenta y Tres, which translates as forty-three, this sweet liqueur was first produced in the 1940s by Diego Zamora and other members of the Zamora family who claim that their recipe was based on an ancient liqueur known as liqvor mirabilis (marvelous liquid).
Although the exact recipe is secret, the liqueur is made with precisely forty-three ingredients—hence the name. After it is aged and filtered, the final result is a smooth and dense golden-colored drink with aromas reminiscent of vanilla, citrus fruit, and spices. Licor 43 can be served well-chilled, preferably on the rocks and enjoyed as a digestif, but it is also commonly incorporated into cocktails and mixed drinks.
MAIN INGREDIENTS
Asiático is a Spanish cocktail made with a combination of coffee, condensed milk, brandy, and Licor 43 – a local liqueur. The drink should be served in a thick, resistant, specially designed glass with coffee beans, lemon rind, and cinnamon.
The early version of Asiático was first prepared by local fishermen who carried recuelo (poor quality coffee), milk, and brandy on their fishing trips to keep them warm. Nowadays, the cocktail is being promoted by the City Council in order to make it a tourist attraction.
Belmonte is a coffee-based beverage that originates from Murcia. It consists of an espresso shot, condensed milk, a splash of brandy, preferably local Belmonte brandy. This coffee is an alcohol-based variety of café bombón, which is also popular in southern Spain.
The drink is served in a glass cup, and the layers of milk and coffee should be visible. It is believed that coffee Belmonte first appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, and it remains one of the staple coffee drinks in Murcia.
