Yellow Bellflower apples

Yellow Bellflower is an American apple variety that was discovered before 1817 in Crosswicks, New Jersey. It’s believed that this apple is the parent of Red Delicious. The apples are large to medium in size, oblong to irregularly conical in shape.

Beneath its skin that bruises easily, the texture of the cream-colored flesh is juicy, crisp, tender, and very aromatic. The flavors are sweet and slightly tart. Yellow Bellflower apples ripen in late fall and it’s recommended to use them for making pies, applesauce, and cider.

One of the alternative names for these apples is Baby Rattler, referring to the fact that the core cavity of Yellow Bellflower is so big that the seeds will sometimes rattle when shaken.
