Teja

Teja is a traditional confectionery that originated in the Ica region but is now enjoyed throughout the country. Tejas are typically filled with a variety of sweet fillings. The most traditional fillings include manjar blanco (a creamy, sweet, milk-based delicacy similar to dulce de leche), or dried fruit (like guava or lucuma) and nuts (pecans being a popular choice).

The filled core is then coated with a sugar syrup that has been thickened, often to the consistency of fondant. This gives the teja its characteristic sweet outer layer. Tejas are often individually wrapped, making them popular gifts or souvenirs.
