Muscat de St-Jean-de-Minervois is a small French appellation that produces fortified sweet wines from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. It is located north of Minervois, in the Saint-Jean-de-Minervois commune. The vineyards are located at slightly higher altitudes than neighboring regions, allowing longer ripening time and later harvest.
Minervois Muscat is a naturally sweet wine (vin doux naturel) produced in a process called mutage—adding alcohol to the must to stop fermentation and preserve natural sugar. The result is a pleasant and harmonious dessert wine with a golden color and elegant character.
The aroma is honey-like, fruity, and floral, reminiscent of citrus and tropical fruit, orange blossom, and thyme. The wines have a distinctive citrus-like freshness and avoid being cloying. Muscat de St-Jean-de-Minervois naturally pairs with fruit desserts, foie gras, and blue cheese.
