Rioja was the first Spanish appellation that received protected status. This renowned Spanish region is located in the north of the country, on both sides of the river Ebro. It is best known for its red varietals and blends, and while Tempranillo is the dominant grape, blending varieties include Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, and Maturana varieties.

Some amount of rosés and whites are also produced. The region is vast, and it is divided into three subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. Aging guidelines categorize it under the generic label with no aging requirements (also known as Joven), Crianza (aged for two years), Reserva (at least three years of age), and Gran Reserva (five years of age and a minimum of two years in a barrel).

Rioja Alta is a Spanish designation located in the west of the renowned Rioja wine region, with a center of production in the city of Haro. Tempranillo and Mazuelo (Carignan) are the two most prominent grapes that are used in Rioja Alta.

The region is praised for their age-worthy red wines that are the best examples of traditional Rioja. They are typically fruit-forward and lighter on the palate, though age can significantly influence the final structure as well as the taste profile.

Officially, Rioja is classified under Crianza (aged for two years), Reserva (at least three years of age), Gran Reserva (five years of age and a minimum of two years in a barrel).

Tempranillo is a red grape variety whose origin is associated with the Iberian Peninsula. Although it is planted in other countries, Tempranillo is best known as the primary grape used in the classic Rioja blend. The wines produced from Tempranillo are typically full-bodied and rich in tannins with the flavors that range from ripe red and dark berries, leather, and tobacco, while aging in French or American oak helps them attain typical vanilla and spice notes.

In the Rioja wine, Tempranillo is the principal grape, but it is often blended with Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo. The grape is especially popular in Portugal where it is known as Tinta Roriz, and it has also shown success in the United States, South America, and Australia.

Originally called Rioja Baja, this is the warmest and the easternmost part of Rioja. It is also the largest and the most productive of all sub-zones. In the past, the region was often unfairly overshadowed by Alta and Alavesa appellations, due to its low elevation and warm climate.

Garnacha is the most planted variety, but in the 1980s, there was a tendency to replace it with the more popular Tempranillo. Traditionally, the wines coming from this region had a higher alcohol content, flavors of juicy fruit, and less acidity than Alta and Alavesa wines.

Graciano is a red grape variety native to Spain. It is mainly cultivated in Navarra and Rioja wine regions, and it produces aromatic wine with good acidity and tannins. Graciano is known under various synonyms, and it is found in other Mediterranean countries, suggesting that it is an old European variety.

For a long time, the grape was mistakenly thought to be identical to Parraleta. Graciano-based wines are usually intensely colored, aromatic, and high in acidity. They are fresh and sometimes have a spicy character with a fruity aroma reminiscent of mulberry and blackberry, often with hints of violet, vanilla, and mint.

Zurracapote is a popular Spanish mixed drink with numerous recipes and variations. However, the basic ingredients are always the same – sugar, lemon, red wine, cinnamon, and dried fruits. Depending on personal preferences, it can be served over ice, chilled, or at room temperature, and it is typically poured into a goblet.

Since Zurracapote originates from the Rioja region and surrounding areas, it is best to use local red wines when making the drink. Although this refreshing cocktail is quite similar to sangria, Zurracapote relies on extracting flavors from dried fruits and spices, while sangria gets some of its flavors from citrus fruits.

Bodegas Montecillo, founded in 1870, is the third-oldest winery in the Rioja region and the oldest in Fuenmayor. For over 150 years, the winery has remained dedicated to producing authentic Rioja wines, blending traditional methods with modern innovations.

The founder, Don Celestino Navajas Matute, came from a family deeply rooted in Fuenmayor and established the winery after inheriting vineyards from his father-in-law. Today, under the guidance of oenologist Mercedes García, Bodegas Montecillo upholds the founder's philosophy, producing elegant, classic, and timeless wines that reflect the authenticity of the Rioja region.

Viña Monty Graciano Reserva is a premium wine made from 100% Graciano, a grape variety that has become a hallmark in the Rioja region. The 2016 vintage was rated as excellent, with a perfect balance of acidity and alcohol, high aromatic quality, and exceptional phenolic ripeness, giving the wine depth and persistence.

After manual harvesting, grapes from both vineyards are vinified separately. The wine has a cherry-red color with violet hues. Its aromas feature balsamic and spicy notes reminiscent of fennel and black licorice. On the palate, it is firm and exceptionally broad, with sweet tannins, mineral and balsamic nuances, and the presence of black fruit, delivering a long and persistent finish.

This is a triumph. An amazing white showing roasted pineapple, dried apple, flowers and hints of lemon curd on the nose. Hints of almonds, too. Full-body, closed and tight with amazing depth and beauty. Waxy, salty, and creamy. Goes on for minutes. 21 years in wood, seven in concrete and then about three years in bottle.

First year since 1978. Viura with a hint of malvasia. I have the same mind-tingling sensation tasting this as tasting the 1963 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco.

The Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 1934 is a monumental wine, still alive, with this typical old Rioja taste, some vanilla and a lot of tertiary notes as cedarwood, dried dates and figs, but elegant and not in a concentrated way, very long and clean finish, some of the guys identificated this wine at once, for me it was the first time with such an old Rioja. well done.
