James Suckling - 95 points

2023

The 2012 López de Heredia Viña Bosconia Reserva is a distinguished red wine from Spain's renowned Rioja region. This vintage is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano and Mazuelo, sourced from the estate's own vineyards. The wine underwent traditional fermentation and was aged for five years in American oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging before release.

On the nose, it offers an elegant bouquet of raspberries, cherries, and Rioja spice tones, complemented by hints of orange peel, cigar wrapper, and subtle spicy oak. The palate is refined and vibrant, with a superb core of fruit, fine-grained tannins, and impeccable balance, leading to a long, focused, and complex finish.

About Bodegas López de Heredia

Bodegas López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is one of the oldest and most esteemed wineries in the Rioja region of Spain. Founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, he recognized the potential of the Haro area in Rioja Alta for producing exceptional wines.

López de Heredia is renowned for its traditional winemaking methods, including the use of large American oak barrels and extended aging periods in underground cellars, often exceeding the legal requirements for Reserva and Gran Reserva categories.

This practice results in wines of remarkable complexity and longevity. The winery remains family-owned, with the current generation represented by sisters María José and Mercedes López de Heredia, who continue the tradition of preserving the authenticity and quality of their wines.
