MAIN INGREDIENTS
Buck’s Fizz is an English cocktail made with a combination of champagne and orange juice, where the ratio should be 2:1, unlike the Mimosa, which is typically made with equal parts champagne and orange juice. The cocktail is served neat and undiluted in a champagne flute, and it can be garnished with an orange twist.
It was invented in the 1920s by Malachy McGarry at Buck’s Club in London, hence the name. Nowadays, Buck’s Fizz is especially popular at weddings, and it is sometimes used as a hangover cure.
Cheeky Vimto is an English cocktail made with a combination of port wine and WKD Original Blue vodka. In order to prepare it, port wine should be poured into a glass and topped with WKD. Despite the name, the soft drink Vimto is not included in the cocktail, but it is named so because its flavors are reminiscent of the soft drink.
Cheeky Vimto was first prepared in the early 2000s, but it gained popularity in June 2005, when Daily Mail reported it as singer Charlotte Church’s favorite drink.
MAIN INGREDIENTS
Black Velvet consists of only two ingredients in equal parts - dark lager (traditionally Guinness stout) and sparkling wine (typically champagne). This classic cocktail was created in London in 1861 by a bartender who mourned the death of Prince Albert.
Black Velvet is made either by mixing the ingredients together or by gently layering chilled dark beer on top of champagne, then pouring it over the back of a mixing spoon for the best visual effect. The cocktail is typically served without garnishes.
MAIN INGREDIENTS
Negus is a cocktail that combines equal parts of port wine and hot water, sugar, lemon rind, lemon juice, and nutmeg. Traditionally, the drink is made by slowly heating port, sugar, and lemon juice and then adding hot water. When served, it is topped with ground nutmeg.
Variations use sherry or Madeira wines and add various spices. Negus was probably invented and named after Francis Negus—an 18th century English officer, courtier, and politician.
Smoking Bishop is a cocktail and a type of mulled wine or punch that combines red wine, port, spices, and citrus fruit. The drink has a long history, and it was even referenced in the famous A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
It is made with roasted bitter oranges, preferably Seville oranges, red wine, port, sugar, and spices such as cloves, star anise, and cinnamon. The drink was especially popular during the Victorian era, but it probably originated before. The name is most likely a reference to a round serving bowl that resembled a bishop’s miter.
Variations of the drink include Smoking Cardinal, in which port is replaced with claret (a traditional term used for Bordeaux wines in Britain), or Smoking Pope, which is made with the addition of Champagne.
MAIN INGREDIENTS
One-Balled Dictator is a cocktail made with a combination of semi-sweet German wine known as Liebfraumilch, champagne, and a cinnamon ball. In order to prepare it, the cinnamon ball should first be placed at the bottom of a rocks glass.
The wines are then vigorously shaken with ice and strained into the glass. The cocktail was invented during or right after World War II, and its name refers to an English marching tune called Hitler Has Only Got One Ball.
