View moreRat stew is a traditional dish originating from West Virginia, where people use various traps, never poison, to catch the key ingredient for the stew – a rat. Once they've been cleaned, skinned, and chopped, pieces of rat meat are dropped into a broth with garlic, wild onions, and similar local vegetables.
The stew is usually served at gatherings or as a dinner at home. In Marlinton, West Virginia, there's even an annual roadkill cookoff showcasing this stew and similar dishes.
Dixie dog is a traditional hot dog variety that's believed to have origins in Huntington, West Virginia. It consists of a split hot dog roll and a blubbery hot dog sausage that's topped with chili sauce and creamy coleslaw. In West Virginia, Dixie dogs are not called Dixie dogs but simply slaw dogs or hot dogs.
This hot dog variety was created at Stewart's root beer stand, dating back to 1932.

TasteAtlas food rankings are based on the ratings of the TasteAtlas audience, with a series of mechanisms that recognize real users and that ignore bot, nationalist or local patriotic ratings, and give additional value to the ratings of users that the system recognizes as knowledgeable. TasteAtlas Rankings should not be seen as the final global conclusion about food. Their purpose is to promote excellent local foods, instill pride in traditional dishes, and arouse curiosity about dishes you haven’t tried.
