Best Oceanian Insect Types
Found in the deserts of the Australian Outback, witchetty grub is a small, fleshy white larvae of the ghost moth. It is an essential part of the Aboriginal diet because its meat is highly nutritious and rich in protein. It is traditionally consumed live and raw or fresh off the barbecue, when it is served as an appetizer.
The flavor of witchetty grubs can best be described as a cross between chicken and prawn meat, although some compare it to scrambled eggs.
Le ver de bancoule or the bancoule worm is a somewhat unusual specialty of New Caledonia. Both bancoule worm and its mutated insect form are edible; in fact, the consumption of these worms is celebrated every year. They are typically fried with pastis and butter, although they can also be eaten cooked or raw with grated coconut.
Huhu is the biggest endemic longhorn beetle in New Zealand. Their larvae are known as huhu grubs, hatching from eggs that were deposited either in rotten wood or under the bark. During the huhu beetle season, from November to March, the Maori consume these grubs fried, roasted, or raw, although they can also be used as fishing bait.
TasteAtlas food rankings are based on the ratings of the TasteAtlas audience, with a series of mechanisms that recognize real users and that ignore bot, nationalist or local patriotic ratings, and give additional value to the ratings of users that the system recognizes as knowledgeable. TasteAtlas Rankings should not be seen as the final global conclusion about food. Their purpose is to promote excellent local foods, instill pride in traditional dishes, and arouse curiosity about dishes you haven’t tried.
