In its basic form, espresso Romano consists of an espresso shot served with a slice of lemon or a lemon twist. It is suggested that lemon should be rubbed around the edge of the cup—which imparts a light bitter note while drinking espresso.
Despite its name, espresso Romano most likely does not have Italian origin. Some suggest it was an American invention used to cover a taste of a badly pulled espresso, while there are also several theories suggesting that it was an Italian invention that mostly caught up in the United States.
