Chestnut Crab is an American apple variety originating from Minnesota, where it was developed at the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1946. This cross of Malinda and a crabapple is round, small, and has a reddish bronze color.
The apples are harvested in late summer through early fall. The flesh is juicy, sweet, and crisp, while some people claim that it has hints of vanilla and nuts. It’s recommended to use Chestnut Crab apples in desserts, pickling, applesauce, and making cider.
