Chatham Artillery Punch

Chatham Artillery Punch is a punch that originated in Savannah. The cocktail is made with muddled lemon juice and lemon peel, bourbon, Cognac, rum, Champagne, and nutmeg. To prepare the cocktail, lemon peel is muddled with sugar and lemon juice.

The peels are removed from the mix, and the juice is added to a bowl filled with ice cubes or crushed ice. Cognac, bourbon, and rum are added next, and the drink is stirred and topped with Champagne. The original version is nowadays often adjusted and includes various ingredients such as orange juice or tea.

Chatham Artillery Punch was probably created in the mid-19th century. It is not known who invented it, but as reported in the Augusta Chronicle, it was served for the Republican Blues, who were welcomed by Sergeant A. B. Luce and the Chatham Artillery.

The drink became famous in the 1870s after it was served on a riverboat cruise for a group of journalists.
