Cardinale

Cardinale is a vintage Italian cocktail sometimes classified as a descendant or a variation of Negroni and Americano. The cocktail combines gin, bitter liqueur (most commonly Campari), and dry vermouth. The ingredients are poured into a mixing glass rocks glass filled with ice, and the combination is stirred with a spoon until slightly chilled.

The mix is then strained into a rocks glass filled with ice. Cardinale originated in Rome in the 1950s. However, the original version was slightly different and was based on Riesling, along with gin and Campari. Allegedly, German Cardinal Shumann inspired the creation of this cocktail, hence the name.

The story says that the head bartender at the Hotel Excelsior, Giovanni Raimondo, invented the drink for the cardinal. The original version also included spices and lemon zest.
