Avesso | Local Wine Variety From Braga District, Portugal | TasteAtlas

Avesso

(Bornal, Bornao, Borracal Branco, and Borral)

Avesso is a native Portuguese grape mainly cultivated in the Minho wine region. The grape generally results in crisp and fresh wines of very good quality. Avesso is used in varietal and blends, and it is mainly included in Vinho Verde wines, where it can sometimes reach high alcohol content—12 or 13%, while the allowed Vinho Verde maximum is 11.5%.

Avesso is a vigorous and versatile grape that proved suitable for barrel aging. The wines are aromatic, and they usually have a good body, fresh acidity, and aromas reminiscent of citrus and stone fruit. Riper examples have juicer notes and hints of tropical nuances.

Avesso wines can be enjoyed as an aperitif, but they also pair well with appetizers, salads, fish, shellfish, sushi, poultry, and light pasta dishes.
