Alexander is a classic cocktail made with a combination of cognac, crème de cacao, and fresh cream. In order to prepare it, all ingredients should be shaken, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. This cocktail is typically garnished with freshly ground nutmeg.
Originally, Alexander was made with gin, but over time, it got replaced by other spirits, and today there are many variations, but they all use a basic premise of 1 part base spirit, 1 part dairy, and 1 part liqueur. It is believed that the first version of this cocktail was invented by Troy Alexander at Rectors in New York, while the first printed version of Alexander appeared in Hugo Ensslin’s 1915 Recipes for Mixed Drinks.
