Westlandse Druif

Westlandse druif are grapes produced in the Westland, in South Holland and have a special, aromatic and sweet taste. They are so popular in the area that during grape season, one can even find a special 'grape menu' in restaurants. As the delicate Westland grapes are grown exclusively in glasshouses, they were the first products to be grown in them around 1850, when the first glasshouses were built. At first, the glasshouses consisted of a brick wall and the rest of the walls were made of glass, but it was not until 1900 that glasshouses consisted entirely of glass walls.

The glasshouses are constantly heated due to the fact that plants grow faster when exposed to heat and light. As it is one of the most popular products of Westland, in 1999, De Westlandse Druif foundation emerged as a protector and marketer of this product, occasionally organizing wine festivals, guided tours, and grape examinations. Westland grapes can be enjoyed on their own but they also go hand in hand with cheese platters.
