Tomate La Cañada

Tomate La Cañada is a unique tomato cultivated in the municipalities of Almeria and Nijar that are a part of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. It is an area of incredible landscapes with a semi-arid climate and volcanic soils, surrounded by mountain ranges such as the Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Los Filabres, Sierra Alhamilla,  Sierra Cabrera, and Sierra de Gador.

There are four types of Tomate La Cañada: Redondo Liso (Smooth Round) - a dark red tomato of mild flavor and a long shelf life, Tomato Cereza (Cherry Tomato) is a fragrant tomato of a rich taste and high sugar content with a thick skin that rarely splits. Asurcado (Ribbed) is an intensely green colored tomato of an irregular shape with a very high sugar content. Oblongo o Alargado (Oblong) is a tomato of an intense red color and a flavor which is less acidic than that of other varieties.

For now, Tomate la Cañada are the only Spanish tomatoes with a PGI status, which is a result of the specific soil they are grown on, the water salinity, and a suitable number of sunny hours in the region.
