Parraleta is an old Spanish red grape that most likely originated in Somontano. It is known under various names, and it is found in several Mediterranean countries, namely Portugal (Tinta Caiada) and Italy. The grape is rare, and the plantings are limited.
It is used as a varietal, and it is mainly blended with Moristel or Tempranillo. Some exciting examples now come from Alentejo, where locals work on creating more concentrated and richer styles. Parraleta is a low-yielding and late-ripening red grape that produces deeply colored wines with a slightly rustic character.
