Orange Julius | Local Non-alcoholic Beverage From Los Angeles, United States of America | TasteAtlas

Orange Julius

Orange Julius is a drink that combines fresh orange juice, crushed ice, sugar, and a secret mix of powders. Some suggest that the secret blend consists of egg white powder, milk powder, and vanilla flavoring. The ingredients are blended until the drink attains a thick, frothy consistency.

It is sweet and refreshing, while its flavor is often compared to Creamsicle. Julius Freed is often cited as the inventor of the drink, but there are several claims that it was his partner Willard Bill Hamlin who initially thought of the idea. The first Orange Julius stand was opened in 1926 in Downtown Los Angeles.

The two worked together until Hamlin later paid out Freed. He used smart marketing skills and turned the company into a franchise. When he sold the company in 1967, they had more than four hundred outlets in the USA and several other countries around the world.

The exact ingredients used in the drink are still kept secret. Interestingly, Orange Julius was the official drink of the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York.
