Opalescent is an American apple variety originating from Michigan and dating back to 1880, when George Hudson found the seedling in Barry County. These apples are large and conical with a pale yellow skin that’s striped bright scarlet.
Beneath the skin, the texture of the flesh is creamy, crisp, and firm, while the flavor is sweet. Opalescent apples ripen in late fall and it’s recommended to use them in baking and desserts. Their storage quality is quite good as they become waxy, which prolongs the shelf life.
