Kulo Ufi

Kulo ufi is a type of edible yam cultivated and grown on the islands of Tonga. It belongs to the Dioscorea alata L. species, also known as water yam or white yam. This yam is a short or round white-fleshed variety whose flesh is hard and coarse.

It is usually planted during the third or last season of yam planting that starts in October and continues through December, traditionally known as the tokamui planting season. There are many varieties of kulo ufi yam grown throughout the Tongan islands of ‘Eua, Ha’apai, and Vava’u including kulo hako, kulo hina, kulo kau, and kulo matapuko.
