Kaiware | Local Radish Sprouts From Japan | TasteAtlas

Kaiware

(Kaiware Radish Sprouts, カイワレ大根, Kaiware Daikon, Radish Sprouts)

Kaiware are daikon radish sprouts, often used in Asian cuisine. These sprouts have a pungent flavor of radish with a peppery and piquant finish. They're also healthy and very rich in minerals and vitamins. Due to their crunchy texture, kaiware sprouts are often in sandwiches, spring rolls, or as an accompaniment to sushi and sashimi.

The sprouts are also commonly used as a garnish for soups and stir-fries. It is believed that the Japanese have been eating kaiware since the Heian era (794-1185), when it was considered a luxury ingredient because each radish was hand-planted.
