Isle of Harris Distillers

The Isle of Harris Distillery, also known as "The Social Distillery," was established in 2015 in Tarbert on the Isle of Harris, Scotland. It is the first legal distillery on the island, located near the ferry terminal, making it easily accessible to visitors.

The distillery gained international recognition for its Isle of Harris Gin, renowned for its refreshing maritime character, achieved through the use of locally harvested Sugar Kelp as a key botanical ingredient. In 2023, the distillery released its first single malt whisky, The Hearach, reviving whisky production on Harris after more than 170 years.

The water used in production comes from the Abhainn Cnoc a’ Charrain spring, flowing over some of the world's oldest rocks, contributing to the unique profile of their spirits. Dedicated to supporting the local community, the distillery creates jobs and fosters sustainable development on the island.

The team, with an average age of 25, primarily comprises young locals and relies on traditional distillation methods with minimal automation, emphasizing a hands-on approach. Visitors are welcomed to the distillery, open five days a week, where they can enjoy guided tours, tastings, and the warmth of a traditional peat fire in the cozy atmosphere.
