Folar de Olhão

Folar de Olhão is a traditional sweet bread that's more similar to a cake, originating from the Algarve region. It's made with a combination of yeast, water, flour, salt, orange juice, butter, and Aguardente, port, brandy, or rum. The dough is shaped and left to rise, and it's then rolled and placed into a baking pot.

Each disk of dough is topped with a combination of butter, honey, orange peel, cinnamon, and brown sugar. The layered sweet bread is baked until golden brown, then inverted and served warm or at room temperature. During the baking process, the sugar and butter melt, and some is absorbed by the bread, while some bubbles up to develop a crunchy, caramelized coating on the exterior.

Folar de Olhão is especially popular during the Easter festivities.
