Fancy Free is a vintage cocktail that combines bourbon, maraschino liqueur, and bitters (orange and Angostura). The ingredients are mixed over ice, and the combination is then strained into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice or one large ice cube.
The drink is traditionally garnished with an orange twist. The origin of the cocktail is murky, but it was probably created as an improved Old-Fashioned in which sugar was swapped with a sweet liqueur. It most likely originated in the United States, while the first mention in print dates back to 1941 when it was published in
Crosby Gaige’s Cocktail Guide and Ladies’ Companion.
