Europe in maps: Beer vs wine, Onion vs garlic, Oil vs fat...

Rooted in centuries of history and culture, influenced by ingredients and customs brought from all over the world, and shaped by modern needs and wants, today's European gastronomy is a perfect combination of tradition and globalization: sometimes it leans towards the former (like olive oil or wine in the Mediterranean, or beef as preferred meat in countries with a Muslim majority), sometimes it tilts towards the latter (like tropical bananas as a go-to fruit of the Scandinavians).

We have made six maps depicting each country's culinary preferences, from the most popular alcoholic drinks to the preferred type of bulbous vegetable. We used various sources. Some maps are made using the official WHO and FAO stats, and some are created using the data drawn from our database of traditional recipes. Other maps, like the map of the favorite European fruits, were created with the help of ChatGPT 3.5, which we asked to step in and help us analyze the stats.
