San Antonio Bean Burger

Recommended by Jane & Michael Stern and 12 other food critics.
"The house specialty, not to be missed, is a tostada burger. Silky refried beans and massive amounts of cheddar cheese form a luxurious crown for the big hamburger, which also is layered with a sheaf of tortilla chips that offer earthy corn flavor and intriguing chewy crunch. The great condiment for this one is salsa, to which customers help themselves near the pickup window. French fries are fresh-cut and delicious."

"When you've been selling burgers since 1977 and guests are still asking for more, you must be doing something right. Formerly Chris Madrid’s Tacos and Burgers, Madrid’s dropped the taco half of the title after realizing what San Antonians really wanted: just juicy burgers. No matter what size you prefer, order the Tostada Burger. Topped with Mama Madrid’s homemade refried beans, chips, onions and melted cheddar cheese, the Tostada Burger is the restaurant’s specialty burger for a reason."
"Although San Antonio's patron burger saint passed away in 2012 at the tender age of 61, Chris Madrid's legacy lives on through the long lines at his eponymous burger joint. On a Saturday at lunchtime you can expect at least a 20-minute wait, which seems a bit silly until you receive your monstrous Tostada Bean Burger, which looks and tastes like the lovechild of a burger and nachos."
"Two words: tostada burgers. Topping a burger with tortilla chips and refried beans sounds weird, but it works, combining two of our favorite meals into one deliciously unholy alliance. Throw some jalapeños on for a memorable meal."
"Specialty burgers include the Tostada Burger, a freshly prepared beef patty smothered in homemade refried beans, chips, onions, and melted cheddar cheese. Topped with freshly made salsa. The burgers were fresh, flavorful, and delicious!"
"Tex-Mex meets Americana at this fun, down-home joint known for its extra-large “macho” burger, a supersize version of the standard burger. The ever-popular tostada burger comes with crushed tortilla chips, refried beans, and real cheddar. In its macho variety, the “cheddar cheesy” burger is intimidating, with cheddar oozing out over the large patty, engulfing even the platter."
"While the original names belong to the new owner of Chris Madrid’s (under reconstruction after a fire), the burgers themselves remain much the same. Dig into a cheesy, oozy bean burger or a triple-patty tower with full understanding that the napkins will never afford enough protection given the squishy nature of the tender buns."
"A San Antonio establishment, Chris Madrid's is a comfy restaurant with a full bar on one side and a patio. Try the Tostada Burger, a juicy hamburger with onions, refried beans, and a large chunk of melted cheese that oozes all over the patty."
"For exceptionally tasty fare head over to Chris Madrid’s on Blanco Rd. Their specialty is the Tostada Burger which embodies San Antonio with its homemade refried beans and salsa. Chris Madrid’s is a local favorite and if you live in San Antonio and haven’t tried it, you’re missing out."
"To say that they are proud of their cheese is an understatement. The bottom half of my burger was not visible due to the skirt of cheese it was wearing. The savor of the cheese, the patty combined with the earthy refried beans and the crunch of the chips made for a flavor and texture experience that few burgers have ever achieved. To top it all off the fresh salsa added a comparable but much more enjoyable tomato element than ketchup. This was a messy burger. I had salsa and bean all over my hands ... Read more
