Blackthorn is a vintage cocktail that comes in two versions. One is made with Irish whiskey, while the other is based on sloe gin. Whiskey-based Blackthorn combines Irish whiskey, dry vermouth, and a dash of bitters and absinthe. Modern variations sometimes use equal parts dry and sweet vermouth.
The cocktail is made by shaking all the ingredients with ice, and the mix is then strained into a glass filled with ice. Blackthorn is usually served in a rocks glass and garnished with a lemon twist. The first written version appears in 1900 in Harry Johnson's Bartender's Manual.
