Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa

Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa is a Portuguese brined olive produced from the Galega variety of the Olea europaea L. species. The brine used for producing the olive can also have aromatic herbs such as bay leaves, oregano, and thyme, plus garlic and lemon as ingredients.

The olive weighs between 2-3 grams, its color ranges from carbon black to sepia brown, and it tastes slightly winey. Several types of this olive are available on the market: whole, shredded, pitted, sliced, and a paste. The production takes place in a number of municipalities, namely Covilhã, Belmonte, Fundão, Penamacor, Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco, Vila Velha de Ródão, Proença-a-Nova, Oleiros, Sertã, Vila de Rei and Mação.

In 2023, the Galician olive from Beira Baixa was given the PGI label, which guarantees that a product or ingredient comes from a specific region or place responsible for its unique properties, and at least one stage of production takes place in the said place or region.
